Are you ready for some football?
The foot kind of ball.
The World Cup starts up this week — and with it comes a host of new and exciting digital experiences powered by web3 and blockchain technology. From NFTs to virtual experiences, the World Cup is leveraging the latest and greatest in cutting-edge technology to provide fans with the ultimate experience.
Let's take a look at some of the World Cup-related NFT and web3 projects coming out this week.
And yeah, definitely aware of the controversies surrounding this year's WC, but let's keep it super high-level, and just look at how web3 is working on the world's biggest stage.

This week's top collections by volume:
Otherdeeds picked up some serious steam this week, winning the top spot for volume. Not sure what the latest speculation is, but people are buying! KPR close to the top for the second week in a row.
World Cup and Soccer NFT and Web3 Experiences
The World Cup is one of the biggest sporting events in the world, and this year’s edition is set to be even bigger and better than ever before. One of the main reasons for this is the introduction of blockchain technology and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
FIFA, the governing body of the World Cup, has partnered with a number of companies to create a number of NFT-related projects. These include an official World Cup NFT fan badge, an NFT version of the World Cup trophy, and virtual experiences that can be bought with NFTs.
This is a huge step forward for the adoption of blockchain technology and NFTs. It shows that major organizations are starting to see the potential of these new technologies, and are beginning to experiment with them.
The World Cup is also helping to drive innovation in the area of virtual experiences. A number of companies are offering virtual reality (VR) experiences that can be purchased with NFTs. This includes a VR experience of the opening ceremony, as well as match highlights and player interviews.
Notable World Cup-Related Projects
FIFA licencses multiple web3 games:
Altered State Machine - AI league football game
Upland - blockchain-based metaverse for buying and selling virtual properties. Upland has now introduced FIFA World Cup digital assets and collectibles — exclusively on Algorand

Phygtl - AR game (actually have no idea what this is, haha)
MatchDay - prediction game based on football cards on Solana

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how blockchain technology and NFTs can be used in relation to the World Cup. It will be fascinating to see how these new technologies are used over the course of the tournament, and what other innovations they inspire.
“As we continue to build our gaming strategy long into future, it’s certain that web 3.0 will have an important role to play, and this marks the start of our journey.”
Non-FIFA Soccer and World Cup Projects
Nike
Nike's Footballverse dropped this week with an insane promo video that imagines lining up the best players of all time against each other. Highly recommend checking it out:
No idea what the footballverse actually is, but that video is rad!

The Future of Web3 and Global Events
As the world becomes more and more digitized, it's no surprise that global events are starting to leverage web3 and blockchain technology. These technologies offer a number of advantages over traditional methods, including increased security, transparency, and efficiency.
It's likely we'll be seeing a lot more web3 at global events in the future.
